Associate Veterinarian - ER
Sara Cooney, DVM
Dr. Sara Cooney is an associate veterinarian at Pieper Veterinary and part of our rotating small animal medicine and surgery intern class of 2024-2025. A Florida native, she lived in Delray Beach and graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelors' in Zoology and a minor in flute performance before later graduating from Tufts University's Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Cooney has a special interest in avian medicine and during her schooling she conducted research on aquatic bird bornavirus (ABBV-1) in Canada Geese, and studied bird-window collisions and methods for their prevention. She is a member of the AAV (Association of Avian Veterinarians) and ARAV (Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians).
Dr. Cooney has always had a deep love of animals, starting with catching lizards and watching ducks at the park as a small child (though she has since graduated to appreciating wildlife from a much safer and animal-friendly distance). She lives with her Indian Ringneck parakeet, a Kenyan Sand Boa, a Crested Gecko, and a Club-tailed Iguana. Her favorite part of her job is being able to be present and helping our pets when no one else can, from overcoming illness to providing end-of-life care and comfort. When not working she enjoys birdwatching, hiking, crafting and dressing in cosplay for anime and comic conventions, and digital and traditional art.
